About

This Bio is written in the third person. Although it’s pretty awkward to write about yourself like a narrator, it’s how these things are generally done; you know so someone can just cut and paste sections of it and then go smoke a joint behind the dumpster or something. At any rate, this is the most succinct way I could wrap up my career in hip hop.

Hapless grew up in Minnesota. At the time the Twin Cities weren’t especially known as the hot-bed of rap that they are today. Hap started running with a small crew of graf writers, this gave him his first taste of hip hop culture.

By the age of 16 Hapless had started free styling with a group of emcees at school. Even though the group separated a year or so later, Hap kept working on his skills wearing out the same beat tape over the course of the next 3 years.

When he was 19 Hapless, then Syst founded the group Cenospecies with another prominant Minneapolis emcee. The group released Cenospecies InDefinition and garnered some acclaim before breaking up shortly thereafter.

For the next 4 years Hapless attended college, released another album as Syst and got his degree. Almost immediately Hap moved out to San Francisco and got a job. While working full time Hap kept producing and writing what would eventually become “Futile”.

Now 29, Hap has finally completed his work on what he believes to be his best complete album to date. To put it in his own words, “I’m just trying to make the music I would want to listen to and do right by all the people who came before me”.
